About Adaptive Balancing Power
Adaptive Balancing Power (ABP) is a spin-off of the Technical University of Darmstadt and develops, manufactures and distributes high-performance energy storage systems based on kinetic energy storage. The core product AMPERAGE is an outer-rotor flywheel energy storage system with a carbon fiber rotor, permanent magnet synchronous machine, passive and active magnetic bearings and vacuum containment, which rotates at up to 18,000 rpm and provides a rated power of 200 kW and 20 kWh of usable energy content. The systems store energy purely mechanically without chemical components, achieve up to 92% round trip efficiency, 1,000,000 charge cycles or a 25-year service life and are fully recyclable. The product portfolio comprises the commercial storage system AMPERAGE AC, the modular DC core product AMPERAGE DC, the pantograph booster for en-route charging of electric buses, and boosted ultra-fast chargers. Fields of application include industrial and commercial power grids, railway and traction power networks, charging infrastructure for e-mobility, grid operators and critical infrastructure. At the headquarters in Pfungstadt near Darmstadt, development and manufacturing are carried out with regional and European supply chains; installation, commissioning, remote maintenance and annual on-site maintenance are part of the service offering.

Materials & Processes
Carbon fiber (flywheel mass)
High-strength material enables high speeds of up to 18,000 rpm and a long service life of the rotor flywheel mass.
Permanent magnet synchronous machine
Serves as an integrated electric machine for accelerating the rotor when charging and as a generator when discharging within milliseconds.
Magnetic bearings (active and passive)
Contact-free, maintenance-free bearing without wear supports the rotor weight and stabilizes technology-specific nonlinearities.
