Family Business Since 1921

Founded in 1921, Adolf Gottfried Tonwerke GmbH is a family business based in Großheirath south of Coburg, which extracts and refines high-quality mineral raw materials from its own reserves. At the main headquarters, clays, slags, fireclay, and ceramic masses are processed with an annual production of over 100,000 t; Gottfried is considered one of the leading producers in Europe, especially in the slag sector. Through the subsidiary Gottfried Feldspat GmbH, white-firing feldspar sand (pegmatite) is mined in Freihung/Thansüß and finely ground in an iron-free mineral mill. The spectrum of processes includes milling, mixing, drying, spray drying down to < 63 µm, and calcination in rotary kilns, supplemented by toll processing for foreign raw materials. Experienced ceramic engineers develop tailor-made raw material solutions for the ceramic, refractory, glass, and construction material industries together with customers. The ISO 9001-certified company ensures quality through its own laboratory and operates an energy management system according to ISO 50001.

Raw Materials and Processes

TON

Raw and Ground Clay (20–43 % Al₂O₃)

Base raw material for refractory masses, stoneware tiles, capsule clay, and construction ceramics; available raw, crushed, freshly dug, or spray-dried down to < 63 µm.

SCH

Slag

Specified according to refractoriness, porosity, thermal expansion, and grain size (< 30 mm to < 63 µm) for refractory products, sanitary and construction ceramics, including cordierite slags.

SPK

Fireclay (fine-crystalline)

Optimal for steatite and cordierite masses; calcined especially advantageous for extruded products such as insulating components for electrical ceramics and honeycomb bodies.

PEG

Pegmatite / Feldspar

White-firing base raw material for porcelain, sanitary ceramics, tiles, and clinker; washed feldspar sand also used as a diluent and Al₂O₃ carrier in glass.

KM

Ceramic Masses / Granulate Masses

Plastic, slagged masses with adjusted moisture content for refractory products, construction ceramics, oven tiles, and pottery.

ARG

Argolitec (high-purity illites)

Clay mineral product range based on high-purity, non-swelling 3-layer silicates, introduced in 2022.

FÜLL

Fillers (finely ground mineral products)

Raw and calcined clay, slag, and feldspar powders as additives for construction materials and building chemistry to influence color, shrinkage, wear, and fire resistance.
