The company Ankerbrot
Ankerbrot was founded in Vienna in 1891 by the brothers Heinrich and Fritz Mendl and, with over 100 branches in Vienna, Lower Austria, Salzburg and Burgenland, is one of Austria's major bakery chains. The company employs around 1,100 staff from more than 44 nations and has been part of the Austrian Austro Holding Group since 2013. At the Lichtenwörth production site – one of Austria's most modern large-scale bakeries since 2024 – up to 120 tonnes of bread and baked goods are baked daily for the ANKER branches, food retail and gastronomy throughout Austria. The product range includes breads, pastries, sweet baked goods, snacks and frozen baked goods for final baking. Ankerbrot delivers to gastronomy and food retail nationwide, provides freezers and ovens as needed, and also offers a franchise system with distribution channels in Austria and Slovakia. Production uses modern manufacturing methods, including a sourdough system in use since 1978 that shortens the production process and is patented in 14 countries.
