About Automation Steeg und Hoffmeyer

Automation Steeg und Hoffmeyer GmbH is a provider of customized special machinery, headquartered in Budenheim near Mainz. Since 1972, the company has developed and manufactured originally semi- and fully automatic machines for the hollow glass and pharmaceutical industries, including unpacking machines for bottles in Clean-Packs, pneumatic gripping systems, palletizing systems, transport systems, as well as pushers and lifters. A key focus today is the automated production of fiber-reinforced plastic composites (FRC): the company develops laboratory and pilot systems, fiber placement and thermoplastic tape laying concepts, and the complete process chain for Cyclic Butylene Terephthalate (CBT) with in-situ polymerization to PBT. Processes such as the Interval Hot Press (IHP) and static pressing with an inductively heated RocTool tool enable the production of organosheets at a rate of one per minute. The portfolio is complemented by metrology with laser line scanning at up to 2000 Hz and the planning, development, programming and manufacturing of custom PLC controls. The team of engineers, technicians and researchers collaborates with research institutions, among other things on lightweight construction concepts for e-mobility.

Materials and Processes

CBT

Cyclic Butylene Terephthalate (CBT®)

Cyclic oligomer that is converted into PBT by in-situ polymerization and accelerates the impregnation of the fiber architectures.

PBT

Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT)

Semi-crystalline engineering thermoplastic as a matrix for high-performance fiber-reinforced plastic composites.

FKV

Fiber-reinforced plastic composites (thermoplastic, continuously reinforced)

Material basis for lightweight construction concepts and functional integration, manufactured at a rate of one per minute.

Prepreg

Prepreg (approx. 620 g/m², 5 layers)

Semi-finished laminate structure for organosheets, e.g. 1000 mm × 640 mm.
