Forge in the fifth generation
Baack Spaten is a traditional spade forge from Hohenlockstedt in Schleswig-Holstein that has existed since 1878 and is today run in the fifth generation by Sven Baack. The company produces hand-forged spades in 34 different shapes as well as sand shovels, hoes, Stieger (mattock-like tools), rakes, tool handles made of ash wood, planting lines and open-die forged parts through to forged frying pans. Production is by open-die forging: the steel blank heated to 1200°C is drawn out and spread with an average of 156 blows of an air hammer, so that the blade and socket are created from a single piece. The spade blades are forged with a taper, making them self-sharpening; since 2009 every spade has been forged from a single heat. Materials include carbon steel, carbon steel and special steel as well as hardened spring steel, complemented by unlacquered ash handles from Germany. Value-added services include heat treatments up to 1000°C, welding, riveting, grinding and assembly including an in-house handle replacement service. The tools serve landscaping, nurseries, civil engineering, surveying and agriculture; distribution is Europe-wide via trading partners and the company's own online shop.

Materials & forging processes
Open-die forging
The blade and socket of every spade are forged from one piece from a single glowing steel blank.
Carbon steel
Base material for the tapered-forged, self-sharpening spade blades.
Carbon steel (hardened)
Used for shovel blades and hardened in a water bath.
Special steel
The test-winner spades such as the Holsteiner Rüffel are forged from a single piece of special steel.
Spring steel (hardened)
Used for hoes and Stieger for continuous professional use.
Ash wood (unlacquered)
Handles made of German ash for high strength and elasticity.
Aluminium
Material of the HERBA aluminium rake with interchangeable tines.
Heat treatment up to 1000°C
Own service offering including hardening of tools.

Quality
Every spade is inspected after riveting before it leaves the forge; quality is confirmed by the tapered-forged, compacted steel structure and multiple trade press tests (including Heimwerker Praxis, FAZ Kaufkompass).
