About the Museum
The Mining and Town Museum is a museum of the town of Weilburg an der Lahn and since February 1949 has been housed in the former Chancellery building of Weilburg Castle, a baroque structure. The basement contains a show mine where, over a length of 200 metres, mining operations, conveying equipment and shaft and tunnel lining are on display with operational original machines. The exhibition on the ground floor documents the mining of the region, including iron ore, slate, phosphorite and marble extraction as well as clay mining. The first floor is devoted to the town history of Weilburg from its first documented mention in 906 to the present. In addition, the museum offers changing special exhibitions in the Small Cabinet, audio guides (German, English, children's tour), a virtual tour, a Historical Archive and the Art Prize of the Town of Weilburg.
