About the Mining Museum

The Mining Museum of the District of Altenkirchen in Herdorf-Sassenroth has been documenting the history of mining and metallurgy in the Siegerland and Westerwald since 1986. It is a museum operated by the district of Altenkirchen and is housed in a former school building. The exhibition displays authentic tools, miners' lamps, machines, minerals and documents from over 2,000 years of mining history. A mineral cabinet presents the minerals of the region, and in the basement a reconstructed show mine leads through tunnels and extraction areas into the working world of the miners. Outdoors there is a 15-metre-high, walkable headframe with engine house as well as large-scale equipment, including original machines from the former Charlottenhütte and equipment from a Siemens-Martin steelworks. The museum is one of the official GeoInformationCentres in the GEOPARK Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus and, in addition to special exhibitions, offers guided tours, school teaching projects, mineral and mining-related excursions, and children's programmes.
