About Bergische Edelstahlwerke
Since 1 January 2025, Bergische Edelstahlwerke GmbH (BEW) has been producing high-quality stainless steel and stainless steel castings at the Engelskirchen-Ründeroth site. It was created through the carve-out of the steel mill and steel foundry from the Dörrenberg Edelstahl group and is supported by Callista Private Equity GmbH. In the steel mill, steel is melted in an electric arc furnace; secondary metallurgy, including subsequent alloying according to customer requirements, is carried out via a vacuum degassing unit (DETEM process) and a heated plasma ladle furnace. The steel foundry produces customised components made of alloyed and unalloyed steels for pressure-, temperature- and corrosion-critical applications. Production uses over 90 % recycled scrap metal and 100 % green electricity, and the steel foundry operates CO₂-free. In addition to the steel mill and foundry, the service portfolio includes the Central Materials Technology with material testing, technical customer consulting and materials development.

Materials and Processes
Electric arc furnace
Electrically heated melting unit for stainless steel with over 90 % recycled scrap metal as input material.
Vacuum degassing unit (DETEM process)
Improves the purity level and reduces the hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen content of the melt, designed for 10 t of liquid phase.
Plasma ladle furnace
Heated furnace (14.5 t liquid phase) for rinsing and degassing without time limit as well as subsequent alloying including injection of special elements.
High-grade structural steel
Structural steel for load-bearing, technically stressed components.
rust- and acid-resistant stainless steels
For corrosion-critical applications in chemical, food and environmental engineering.
wear-resistant stainless steels
For components subject to high abrasive and mechanical stress.
heat-resistant stainless steels
For temperature-critical applications in apparatus and mechanical engineering.
Tool steels
For toolmaking with high demands on hardness and service life.
Special materials according to customer requirements
In-house developed or customer-specified materials for individual requirements.
