About the Mining Museum

The Grube Glasebach mine in Harzgerode OT Straßberg is a mining museum and show mine that has been operated by AFG Harz mbH since June 1995. Visitors can explore two originally preserved levels from the 17th and 18th centuries on expertly guided underground tours. The tours start at the museum, lead to the above-ground wheel house with a 9.50-metre water wheel and then continue underground to timbering and extraction techniques in oak wood from the 18th century as well as to the inclined shaft with historic water-lifting technology between the 1st and 2nd levels. The site includes an outdoor museum with original working tools, an exhibition on the history of the mine as well as mineral exhibitions. The museum documents the vein deposit mining on the Straßberg-Neudorf vein system, on which fluorite and other ores were historically mined. Group tours for 15 or more people are available outside opening hours by prior appointment.
