About Bloom Biorenewables

Bloom Biorenewables SA is a chemistry company founded in 2019 as a spin-off of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), headquartered in Marly in the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland. The company has developed a one-pot process for Aldehyde-Assisted Fractionation (AAF) that breaks down lignocellulosic biomass such as sawmill residues, straw or hazelnut shells into its three main components lignin, hemicellulose and cellulose without degrading the native structures. From these fractions, intermediates such as PRIMAA White Lignin, dipropylxylose (DPX, 97% purity) and microfibrillated cellulose (MFC, 30 wt% solids content) are produced. These ingredients serve partners as a formulation platform for Personal Care, functional paper/thermal paper, and paints and coatings; Bloom does not sell end products itself. Production takes place on a multi-tonne scale with an 8 m³ reactor, with around 80 weight percent of the biomass being utilized. In addition, Bloom conducts research in several EU-funded projects, among other things on lignin-based plastic additives and Biogenic Heavy Fuel Oil as a marine fuel.
