About the Brauerei zum Kuchlbauer

Brauerei zum Kuchlbauer GmbH & Co. KG is a medium-sized, family-run private brewery based in Abensberg in Lower Bavaria. The company was first mentioned in documents in 1499 and counts itself among the oldest breweries in Bavaria. Since 1969, the brewery has specialised in the production of wheat beer under the management of Leonhard Salleck; since 2014, Jacob Horsch has led the company in the ninth family generation. The beer is produced with an in-house yeast strain and the brewery's own well water, and fermentation takes place in open fermentation vats. The best-known products include Kuchlbauer Weisse, Turmweisse, Alte Liebe and the dark wheat beer bock Aloysius; in 2021, annual production amounted to 58,000 hectolitres. Since 1997, the Spezial-Brauerei Schierling has belonged entirely to the company, and in 2019 the De Bassus Schlossbrauerei was also acquired. The brewery includes a visitor brewery with the nearly 35-metre-high Kuchlbauer Tower designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, as well as the KunstHausAbensberg.
