About CO2 Werkstatt

CO2 Werkstatt GmbH, based in Vienna, uses the greenhouse gas CO2 together with alcohols such as (bio-)ethanol or methanol and renewable energies to produce organic carbonates. The patented process avoids fossil and toxic feedstocks and enables local production. The chemicals produced, diethyl carbonate and dimethyl carbonate, are used as a green electrolyte for lithium-ion batteries, as a green solvent in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries, and as a feedstock for plastics such as polycarbonate. The process has been developed since 2017 in cooperation with TU Wien and is operated in a demonstrator prototype; a membrane test rig supports process development. Based on the existing infrastructure, the first pilot plant is currently being planned. In addition to CO2 utilization, the company offers energy and material flow analyses as well as consulting on energy efficiency and renewable energies.
