About us
CONTREF GmbH Glas- und Kunststoff-Spezialverbunde of Delligsen was a highly specialised company for laminated safety glass (bullet-resistant glass). The laminates consist of flat glass panes and/or polycarbonate sheets, permanently laminated with transparent, elastic plastic interlayers – in addition to common thermoplastic PUR and PVB films, also thermosetting layer materials that retain ballistic strength even at higher operating temperatures. Partial areas of the laminates are bonded with in-house developed casting resin formulations; in combination with borosilicate glass this resulted in a patented invention of the company. The range of services included, among others, laminates with electric heating, electromagnetic shielding, laser protection, radiation protection as well as customised solutions with laminate thicknesses over 200 mm. Customers included Rheinmetall companies, the NATO Support Agency, Achleitner, BASF and Goodyear. At the end of 2018 the family-owned business closed after more than 30 years on the market.

Materials and laminate structure
Glass
Flat and borosilicate glasses, partly chemically toughened, as the load-bearing component of the laminates.
Polycarbonate
Transparent sheets as the rear spall and fragment containment element of the laminated safety glass.
Thermoplastic PUR film
Elastic transparent interlayer for permanent lamination.
PVB film
Common interlayer for the permanent bonding of the glass layers.
Thermosetting layer materials
Retain the ballistic strength of the laminate even at higher operating temperatures.
Casting resin (in-house developed formulations)
Bonding of partial areas of the laminates and sealing during frame encapsulation.
Borosilicate glass
Highly transparent, lightweight and wear-resistant special glass, part of an earlier patented invention.
Metal frames
Housing for the bullet-resistant glass panes during encapsulation and multiple sealing.

Quality
Every product was non-destructively tested; in addition, a specified number underwent destructive ballistic testing to STANAG 4569 Level 1–4 in the test range −32 °C to +49 °C as well as light transmission measurements. Approvals existed, among others, with the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) and the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt; the quality management system was certified to ISO 9001:2015 (DEKRA, 2016–2019).
