About Cowa Thermal Solutions

Cowa Thermal Solutions AG was founded in 2019 as a spin-off of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and develops and produces compact thermal energy storage units based on phase change materials (PCM). The patented storage concept uses non-toxic, recyclable salt hydrates that absorb large amounts of energy during melting and release it again upon solidification; this achieves a storage capacity of up to 75 kWh/m³, storing the same amount of energy in up to five times less space than conventional water storage tanks. The product range includes the cubic Cowa COMPACT Cell as a buffer storage tank, domestic hot water storage tank and combi storage tank for heat pump and photovoltaic systems, as well as customized storage solutions for OEM partners. In addition to series production, the company offers engineering services from analysis and conception through prototyping to market launch, plus its own material research laboratories in Root and in cooperation with EPFL. Customers include manufacturers in the heating and sanitary industry, building services companies and energy utilities, including EWL Energie Wasser Luzern. Headquarters is the Technopark Luzern in Root D4 (Switzerland).
