About the de:karb project
de:karb is a joint project funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) with 8.3 million euros as part of the GreenTech innovation competition. It launched in June 2023 and is designed to run for three years. Led by TRUMPF, thyssenkrupp Materials Services, the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA and further partners are researching how CO₂ consumption in sheet metal manufacturing can be measured and reduced. The core objective is a freely accessible online platform with which companies can determine the carbon footprint of individual components along the entire supply chain (Scope 1+2+3). TRUMPF is working on AI-based technologies for nesting in laser cutting in order to cut more parts from the sheet. Fraunhofer IPA is developing AI-supported scheduling methods that take ecological criteria into account, such as shifting energy-intensive production steps to times of high availability of renewable energy. thyssenkrupp Materials Services orchestrates material, value and data flows via the digital platform and integrates uniform standards for networking the partners' IT systems.
