DENIC eG, headquartered in Frankfurt am Main, is the central registry for all .de domains. It maintains the central domain register, operates the technical infrastructure for the worldwide reachability of over 17 million .de domains, and additionally manages the ENUM domains for the German numbering space (+49). The registered cooperative, founded in 1996 by 37 Internet Service Providers, operates on a non-profit basis and today counts around 300 members, mostly providers and web hosts. In addition to registry operations, DENIC offers services such as DNSSEC signing, .de Registry Lock, Anycast name service for TLD registries at 24 locations on 6 continents, and — through its 100% subsidiary DENIC Services GmbH & Co. KG in Darmstadt — data and digital escrow services. DENIC Services is the exclusive Designated Data Escrow Agent of ICANN and serves over 2,600 escrow customers worldwide. The company operates two independent, highly secure data centers and works according to the management system standards ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and ISO 22301:2020.

Information Security and Business Continuity

DENIC operates according to a certified management system in accordance with ISO/IEC 27001:2022 (information security) and ISO 22301:2020 (business continuity). Systems are monitored 24/7; the two independent data centers ensure redundancy and stability for billions of daily requests.

History

1. 1986

   November 5: Entry of the country code .de in the IANA database; administration initially by CSNET in the USA

2. 1988

   Administration transferred to the Computer Science Computing Operations Group (IRB) of the University of Dortmund; the name DENIC is coined; six domains registered

3. 1993

   August: Constitution of the Interest Group Deutsches Network Information Center (IV-DENIC) by DFN, EUNET and Xlink

4. 1994

   From January, the data center of the University of Karlsruhe takes over administration of the approx. 1,000 .de domains

5. 1996

   First half of the year: 37 German Internet Service Providers decide to found DENIC eG; by mid-1996 the number of domains rises to 20,000

6. 1997

   July: Establishment of the DENIC head office in Frankfurt am Main

7. 2006

   DENIC takes over the registration of the ENUM domains for the German numbering space (+49)

8. 2021

   July 13: 17-millionth .de domain registered; 25 years of DENIC eG; rollout of DNS 3.0 with the first virtual name server location in Sydney

9. 2022

   Construction of DENIC's own cloud platform; study confirms .de as the most popular and most trusted domain ending in Germany
