About DENIC eG

DENIC eG, based in Frankfurt am Main, is the central registry for all .de domains and manages the central domain register with over 17 million entries. Founded in 1996 by 37 German Internet service providers as a cooperative, the organization operates the technical infrastructure for the worldwide reachability of .de domains, including an anycast nameserver network with 24 sites on six continents as well as two highly secure data centers with 24/7 monitoring. Its services include the real-time registration system, whois service, DNSSEC, IDN domains, Registry Lock and ENUM domains for the German numbering range. Through its wholly owned subsidiary DENIC Services GmbH & Co. KG, based in Darmstadt, DENIC also offers anycast name service for TLD registries as well as data and digital escrow services and acts as a designated ICANN Data Escrow Agent. The cooperative operates on a not-for-profit basis and has around 300 members.

   Administration transferred to the Informatikrechner-Betriebsgruppe (IRB) of the University of Dortmund (the DENIC name is created)

3. 1993

   Constitution of IV-DENIC by DFN, EUNET and Xlink

4. 1994

   Data center of the University of Karlsruhe takes over .de administration from January (approx. 1,000 domains)
