About KG Deutsche Gasrußwerke

KG Deutsche Gasrußwerke GmbH & Co (DGW) is a mid-sized chemical company founded in 1936 and headquartered in Dortmund that manufactures Carbon Black (industrial carbon black) on an industrial scale. Production is carried out using the gas black process as well as the furnace black process, in which liquid aromatic hydrocarbons such as coal tar oils are sprayed into a flame of natural gas and heated air inside a ceramic-lined furnace. The Carbon Black is then pelletized in the pelletizing process with the addition of water and sodium lignosulfonate and dried in a drying drum heated by natural gas and residual gas. The company produces more than 100,000 tons of Carbon Black per year for the tire and rubber industry as well as Pigment Blacks for the paint, printing and plastics industries. In addition to its carbon black products, DGW supplies electricity to Dortmund and feeds district heating generated from waste process heat into the local heating network. In 2015, the company implemented an innovative modification of the furnace black process on an industrial scale for the first time, using a off-gas steam condenser for waste heat and water recovery.
