About Ekornes Beds AS

Ekornes Beds AS is a Norwegian manufacturer of beds and mattresses based in Fetsund northeast of Oslo. The company produces continental beds, compact beds, box beds, adjustable beds, mattresses, toppers and accessories under the Svane brand, the oldest brand in the Norwegian furniture industry (founded 1937). Production takes place in the company's own factory in Fetsund (27,000 m²), known as the Sleep Factory, on a former sawmill site acquired in 1962. Value-adding steps include the production of the company's own gel material IntelliGel® (polymer with non-toxic oil, diamond-mesh structure) on a specially developed production machine, the manufacture of temper-hardened pocket spring systems (AdaptiveZone, PluraZone), the production of covers using OEKO-TEX certified upholstery fabrics, and the assembly of the beds. Distribution is handled via the company's own sales companies in the Nordic countries and Central Europe; in Germany, Ekornes Möbelvertriebs GmbH in Hamburg sells the products. Ekornes Beds AS is a wholly owned subsidiary of Ekornes AS.

Quality and Certification

All upholstery fabrics are certified according to STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® and contain no chemicals harmful to health. Svane mattresses with IntelliGel carry the official Norwegian origin label "Made in Norway".

History

1. 1934

   Jens E. Ekornes returns with machines from Germany and begins manufacturing spring cores for the furniture industry.

2. 1937

   Foundation of the Svane brand – Norway's first furniture brand; first mattress models Eva, Ideal and Rekord.

3. 1962

   Ekornes purchases the former sawmill site in Fetsund.

4. 1993

   Introduction of the Svane DuoSystem.

5. 1999

   Discovery of IntelliGel; letter of intent between Ekornes Beds and EdiZone (inventors Tony and Terry Pearce, Alpine, Utah, USA).

6. 2001

   Zipper solution (later FlexSystem) comes onto the market.

7. 2003

   Completion of the IntelliGel production machine in Fetsund; still in operation today.

8. 2004

   Market launch of the Svane Zenit bed (with IntelliGel, developed with chiropractor Hans Jørgen Sørensen).

9. 2006

   Market launch of the Svane Zefir bed.

10. 2021

    All Svane continental beds are equipped with FlexSystem (four firmness levels).
