About Elektrowerk Weisweiler GmbH
Elektrowerk Weisweiler GmbH (EWW) is a metallurgical plant founded in 1917 in Eschweiler-Weisweiler in the Aachen region. The company produces ferrochrome and special alloys as well as powder metallurgy products for the metallurgical and steel industries; according to the company, some of the special alloys produced are manufactured nowhere else in the world. Production is carried out electrometallurgically in the electric furnace plant, complemented by a range of analytical services for quality control. Chrome ore supply was based on company-owned mines in Turkey; the company belongs to the Finnish Ruukki Group. At the Weisweiler site, production and administration are bundled in one location, and the plant delivers worldwide. The company's philosophy revolves around quality, precision and sustainability in alloy production.

Core product of the plant, used as an alloying carrier for steel and stainless steel production.
Special ferrochrome alloys
Special ferrochrome alloys manufactured to customer specifications, some of them produced nowhere else in the world.
Ferromanganese
Ferroalloy produced historically for the alloying of steel.
Ferro-molybdenum
Ferroalloy whose production was set up in 1972 with a dedicated 175 m chimney and discontinued in 1986.
Ferro-tungsten
Ferroalloy from the historical product range of the electric furnace plant.

History
- 1917
Founding of the electric furnace plant in Weisweiler for the production of metal alloys (ferrochrome, ferromanganese, ferro-molybdenum, ferro-tungsten); construction of an own industrial railway with a connection to Weisweiler station (operated until 1988).
- 1925
The adjacent residential street with company housing is named Elektrowerk.
- 1972
Construction of a 175-metre-high chimney for ferro-molybdenum production.
- 1986
Discontinuation of ferro-molybdenum production; the chimney remains unused.
- 1988
A fire in the chimney on 26 April causes damage running into millions and spreads to other plant facilities; afterwards the chimney is used by mobile network operators as a transmission mast. End of the industrial railway.
- 2012
Reduction of the chimney from 175 to 99 metres and sealing.
- 2023
Complete demolition of the chimney.
Membership of the Finnish Ruukki Group; chrome ore extraction in company-owned mines in Turkey.
