About the Energiepark Hahnennest
The Energiepark Hahnennest is an energy park in Baden-Württemberg, founded in 2011 by four family-run farms from the Ostrach district of Hahnennest. The core of the operation is a biogas plant in which renewable raw materials and residues of animal origin, which would otherwise remain unused for energy purposes, are fermented into biogas. A large proportion of the biogas produced is upgraded to biomethane and fed into the German natural gas grid; in addition, the park generates electricity and heat, with the waste heat supplying more than 100 households in the surrounding villages. Based on the cascade use of energy crops — including, as one of the first operations in Germany, Cup plant (Silphie) along the Danube — natural fibre materials for use as bedding and other raw materials are also produced. The project brings together farmers from different production directions and pursues the goal of using resources efficiently and minimising waste and greenhouse gas emissions.
