About FireDrone
FireDrone AG is a spin-off of Empa (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology) based in Dübendorf. The company develops an autonomous aerial system for firefighting operations and industrial applications in extreme environments. The FireDrone is a high-temperature-resistant aerial platform with thermal and visual cameras (Dual Vision System), GPS-independent navigation, obstacle detection and 3D mapping; it operates at up to 200 °C for over 10 minutes. The ecosystem includes the drone, a portable Handheld Streamer unit for live-streaming thermal and visual data to the command center, as well as upcoming extensions a Ground Station with autonomous docking and charging and data analysis software. The technology has been tested in real fires (live-fire training) and extreme industrial environments. It is based on research by the Laboratory of Sustainability Robotics and the Superinsulation Materials Group at Empa.
