About us

The violin-making workshop of Markus Lage is a master workshop in Bielefeld specialising in the making, restoration and repair of string instruments. Its range of services also includes varnishing and varnish retouching, maintenance and tonal adjustment, baroque conversions as well as the finishing of factory-made instruments (student instruments). In addition, the business offers instrument and bow sales as well as rental instruments. The workshop works by hand with luthier's timber; for baroque conversions, hand-made pegs, tailpieces and veneered fingerboards are produced, among other parts. Markus Lage learned the craft at the State Technical School for Violin Making in Mittenwald, gained experience in workshops in the USA and Switzerland, and passed his master craftsman examination in 1992. The workshop is located in the centre of Bielefeld near St. Paul's Church in a former warehouse from 1906, renovated in 1997/98.
