About Gipsbergbau Engel GmbH
Gipsbergbau Engel GmbH has been extracting natural gypsum for over 70 years. The company originated from the firm “Trierer Gipswerke Sartor & Engel”, founded in 1946, from which Gipsbergbau Engel GmbH emerged after a division into various business units. Since the 1980s, the “Horst-Peter-Stollen” mine in Ralingen has been operated, in which an approximately 10 m thick gypsum deposit in the Middle Muschelkalk of the Ralingen Formation is extracted underground using the room-and-pillar method. The extracted natural gypsum is a natural mixture of gypsum and anhydrite rock, formed more than 232 million years ago by the evaporation of a sea and protected from foreign substances by natural cap rock. The extracted natural gypsum is processed before shipping and serves, among other things, as a contaminant-free setting regulator in cement production, as a fertilizer, and as a calcium and sulfate carrier. Residual materials are placed back into the mine's cavities as backfill. The administration is located in Trier, production in Ralingen on the Sauer river.
