Craftsmanship from over 500 years of manufactory tradition
Gmundner Keramik Manufaktur GmbH & Co KG is one of the largest ceramics manufactories in Central Europe and has been producing in Gmunden in the Salzkammergut region (Austria) since 1492. In the manufactory with around 115 employees, 25 of whom work in the painting studio, hand-crafted tableware and decorative ceramics are made: mugs, plates, bowls, platters, jugs, pitchers and special objects. The production process includes throwing and casting the clay, applying in-house developed glazes and colours, retouching, sponging, painting and the traditional flammen technique, in which the colour is sprayed onto the ceramic with a fine hose – a technique that has been listed as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage since 2021. Each piece undergoes up to 60 manual steps and is a unique one-off; plaster moulds are produced by hand (approx. 60 uses) and are subsequently recycled in cement works. Orders starting from a single piece, personalised products and custom-made items are also part of the offering. Customers include gastronomy, hotels, retail and private customers in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and worldwide.
