About the Hausbrauerei Feierling

Hausbrauerei Feierling GmbH operates a brewery inn with restaurant, Insel (island bar) and beer garden on Augustinerplatz in Freiburg's old town. The bottom-fermented pale whole beer Inselhopf with an original gravity of approx. 13% is brewed year-round and served naturally cloudy and unfiltered. In the winter half-year, seasonal specialties such as the dark beer Bruno and the Bock beer Brunhilde are added. The raw materials come from organic farming; the operation is inspected by the organic control body LACON GmbH (DE-ÖKO-003). Annual capacity is around 3,000 hectoliters. The restaurant offers seating on three floors, also for larger groups, and serves Baden regional cuisine.

History

  1. 1877

On December 1, master brewer Julius Feierling founds the Inselbrauerei Julius Feierling with a restaurant at the 'Zur Insel' estate; the first pale beer in Freiburg is brewed there.

  2. 1882

The brewery moves to Grünwälderstraße on Augustinerplatz; the original headquarters remains as a restaurant on Gerberau.

  3. 1981

Closure of the production operation due to impaired water quality (construction of the underground car park beneath Augustinerplatz) and delivery traffic in the pedestrian zone; production and delivery rights pass to the Ganter brewery.

  4. 1989

Refounding as Hausbrauerei Feierling by certified master brewer Martina Feierling and graduate economist Wolfgang Rombach at Gerberau 46, opposite the original location.

  5. 2021

Julius Feierling-Rombach joins the management; modernization of the brewing system, renewal of the IT infrastructure and introduction of a new point-of-sale system including card payment.
