About us
HERSTA (Hermann Stahlschmidt Stahlges. m.b.H.) is a medium-sized steel distributor and steel processor founded in 1932 and based in Willich near Düsseldorf. The family-owned company with around 60 employees supplies over 35 high-quality grades – including quenched and tempered steels, case-hardening steels, nitriding steels, rolling bearing steels, heat-resistant steels and ZF steels – directly from a stock of approx. 20,000 t, almost exclusively from Germany and Europe. In addition to material supply, HERSTA produces cut-to-size blanks according to customer specifications: on more than 20 sawing systems, round, flat and square steels up to 1,000 mm edge length and piece weights up to 20 t are sawn; three drilling machines and lathes complement the machining, as does centering to DIN 332. Material tests such as ultrasonic testing, tensile and Charpy impact testing as well as third-party inspections by classification societies (including ABS, BV, DNV GL, LR, RINA, RMRS, TÜV) complete the offering. Heat treatment, deep-hole drilling and peeling are offered via a partner network. Customers come from mechanical and plant engineering, gearbox and automotive engineering, wind energy, shipbuilding, the plastics industry and toolmaking.

Materials & Processes
100Cr6 (rolling bearing steel)
Standard material for wear-stressed bearing elements with high purity, ex stock +AC Ø 20–450 mm.
31CrMoV9 (nitriding steel)
Low-distortion and dimensionally stable for long components such as piston rods and screws, available per RENK specifications (ZAN 17905).
18CrNiMo7-6 (case-hardening steel)
For highly stressed gear components such as large gearboxes for wind turbines; available per RENK (ZAN 17901) and ZF (ZF1A).
42CrMo4 (quenched and tempered steel)
Uniform strength across the cross-section for shafts, axles and pins, +QT up to Ø 1,000 mm.
16MnCr5 (case-hardening steel)
Widely used case-hardening steel for mass products in the automotive and mechanical engineering sectors, good machinability.
17CrNi6-6 / ZF1 (case-hardening steel)
High core strength after carburizing; available per specifications of RENK (ZAN 17901) and ZF Friedrichshafen (ZF1).
34CrNiMo6 (quenched and tempered steel)
For dynamically stressed components in plant and automotive engineering, +QT up to Ø 600 mm.
51CrV4 (spring steel)
Proven material for springs, torsion bars and stabilizers with high fatigue strength.
21CrMoV5-7 (heat-resistant quenched and tempered steel)
For components in power plant and pressure vessel construction at elevated operating temperatures.
X153CrMoV12 (tool steel)
Wear-resistant cold-work steel for toolmaking.
X39CrMoV17-1 (stainless steel)
Martensitic stainless steel for corrosion- and wear-stressed components.
Material testing
Ultrasonic testing, tensile, Charpy impact and hardness testing, end-quench test, microstructure examination and piece analysis.
