We shape cities – luminaires and furniture from the Black Forest
Hess GmbH Licht + Form was founded in 1948 by Willi Hess as a foundry and is today an internationally active manufacturer of designed exterior luminaires, masts, solar luminaires, and urban furniture based in Villingen-Schwenningen in the Black Forest. Together with the traditional VULKAN brand (roots dating back to 1898, part of Hess since 2017), the company covers almost the entire spectrum of exterior lighting – from technically efficient streetlights to multifunctional, smart lighting systems. The company's own foundry produces cast parts from gray cast iron (GG), spherical cast iron (GGG), and aluminum; in addition, they offer sand casting (hand and machine molding), shell casting, and aluminum die casting, as well as the manufacturing of conical and cylindrical masts from steel and aluminum. For conical aluminum masts, up to 95% recycled aluminum is used, and gray cast iron parts consist of 99% steel scrap. In addition to luminaires and masts, Hess manufactures urban furniture (benches, planters, barrier systems, waste containers, tree grates, bicycle racks, utility bollards) and LED conversion kits for existing luminaires. In 2003, Hess introduced the world's first LED exterior luminaire. Customers include cities, municipalities, energy providers, and property developers worldwide; since December 2023, Hess has been part of GROUPE RAGNI (France).
