About HEWI
HEWI is a medium-sized company founded in 1955 in Spaichingen and specialized in high-volume production of locking and fastening elements as well as cold extrusion parts. The core process is cold (bulk) forming on horizontal presses with in-house designed, multi-stage forming tools in (near) net-shape quality; around 7 million locking elements leave the two plants in Spaichingen every day. The process chain includes thread cutting, heat treatment (quenching and tempering with heat recovery), electroplated surface coating with zinc and zinc alloy layers as well as zinc flake coatings, hydrogen embrittlement relief/tempering, plastic injection molding for connecting element rings, and machining final finishing on rotary-transfer and CNC machines. The main material is steel; products such as lightweight nuts, washer nuts, transmission nuts, truck wheel nuts, housings and bushings are used in safety-relevant vehicle areas such as transmissions, steering, chassis and damping systems. Customers come from the automotive industry, the commercial vehicle sector and mechanical engineering. With locations in Taiwan, China and Romania (HEWI FORMTECH, production start 2024) as well as the AHWION joint venture with Anton Häring KG, the group serves customers worldwide with around 600 employees.

Materials & Processes
Cold (bulk) forming
Multi-stage cold extrusion on horizontal presses in (near) net-shape quality for high dimensional and geometric accuracy and material efficiency.
Thread cutting
Single- and twin-spindle thread cutting machines form and cut threads under continuous statistical process control.
Heat treatment
Two continuous quenching and tempering lines precisely set the structural-mechanical properties through hardening/austenitizing and tempering; process heat is recovered.
Electroplated coating
Zinc and zinc alloy layers as well as zinc flake coatings ensure corrosion protection, consistent friction coefficients and optimal assembly.
Hydrogen embrittlement relief/tempering
Prevents hydrogen-induced delayed brittle fracture after electrochemical processes.
Plastic injection molding
In-house injection molding machines produce plastic rings for connecting elements from various materials in high lot sizes.
Final machining
Rotary-transfer and CNC machines machine pre-formed pressed blanks by chip removal for tight contours and tolerances.
Steel
Main material of the fastening elements; the patented lightweight nut reduces steel usage compared to a standard nut by up to 30%.
