HSM is an independent, mid-sized family business based in Frickingen on Lake Constance, founded in 1971 by Hermann Schwelling and today led by Hermann Schwelling, Harald Schwelling and Jan-Peter Krupczynski. The company develops, produces and sells baler presses for volume reduction of recyclable materials as well as document shredders for the secure destruction of sensitive data – on paper as well as electronic data carriers. With a manufacturing depth of around 90 %, HSM operates four of its own production sites in Germany: Salem (baler press development, crusher manufacturing, assembly of large presses, plastics production), Bermatingen (large horizontal baler presses), Reichenbach (vertical baler presses) and Frickingen (final assembly of document shredders, administration, sales). Manufacturing includes laser cutting, CNC turning and milling, hardening, welding with CNC welding robots, injection molding and surface coating. HSM processes around 13,000 t of steel and approx. 530 t of plastic granulate annually. With around 820 employees, six subsidiaries worldwide and partners in over 100 countries, HSM supplies industries such as waste management and recycling, retail, printing and packaging, warehousing and logistics as well as social institutions. In 2025 the company was recognized for the Secure Digital Factory.
