About the Königshütte

The Königshütte in Bad Lauterberg in the Harz was built in 1733 as an Electoral Hanoverian ironworks with a foundry operation and was the largest ironworks of the Electorate of Brunswick-Lüneburg. The complex comprised blast furnace operation, a foundry, artistic casting and, from 1834, a wire-drawing plant for wire ropes; iron products for Harz mining were manufactured as well as art casting products such as cannons, obelisks, grave crosses and the cast-iron fountain for the 1889 Paris World Exhibition. Pig iron production ended in 1863 and the foundry operation in 2001. Today, the listed ensemble has been recognised since October 2014 as a cultural monument of national significance and is used as a museum. The Förderkreis Königshütte Bad Lauterberg e.V., founded in 1983, operates the South Harz Ironworks Museum on a volunteer basis, offers guided tours of the ensemble, through the historic foundry with cupola furnaces, the iron warehouse and the machine factory, and demonstrates historic machines from 1875 in running operation. An archive with around 5,000 technical drawings from the years 1875 to 1935 documents the former production.
