Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft Köln Medien GmbH (IW Medien) is a Cologne-based publishing house and the publisher of the business newspaper aktiv. aktiv was founded in 1972 and is aimed at employees in the metal+electrical, chemical, textile and paper processing industries and their families. The newspaper is published in nine industry and regional editions plus the magazines Märkisch aktiv and aktiv im Norden, with a total circulation of more than 400,000 copies; the majority of readers receive the newspaper via delivery at more than 2,000 industrial companies, financed by around 30 industrial employers' associations. In addition to the print newspaper, IW Medien operates the online portal aktiv-online.de, the monthly magazine aktiv8, newsletters, videos (YouTube) and social media channels, as well as aktiv ComBox, a building block system for internal employee communications. The content is created by experienced editors under the umbrella of the Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft (IW) and coordinated with IW scientists. The newspaper is printed in a climate-neutral way on paper certified with the Blue Angel.
