About the iwb
The Institute for Machine Tools and Industrial Management (iwb) is a research institute of the Technical University of Munich founded in 1875 and one of the largest production engineering research institutions in Germany. It comprises three chairs of the TUM School of Engineering and Design at the Garching site near Munich: the Chair of Sustainable Production Systems, the Chair of Machine Tools and Manufacturing Technology, and the Chair of Production Engineering and Energy Storage Systems. Its work is based on the interlinking of fundamental research, applied development and collaboration with industrial partners. The research fields include additive manufacturing (including PBF-LB/M), battery production, laser technology, assembly technology and robotics, sustainable production, production management and logistics, as well as machine tools. In addition to research and teaching, the institute offers technology transfer and industrial cooperation and publishes open-source code and datasets from research projects.
