About Ionic Wind
Ionic Wind was founded in 2025 as an Empa spin-off and ETH startup and develops fanless cooling modules based on electrohydrodynamic airflow generation (Ionic Wind). The technology uses sharp electrodes to charge air molecules, which are accelerated by an electric field, producing a quiet, low-vibration airflow without moving parts. The solid-state airflow amplifiers target applications where mechanical fans reach their limits: tight Z-height constraints, thermal bottlenecks in AI workloads, and requirements for longevity, maintenance-free operation and freedom from interference. The company offers pre-configured cooling modules as well as an Evaluation Kit with integration documentation, measurement tools and direct engineering support for performance measurement. Target industries include high-precision instruments, single-board computers and embedded systems (including Jetson, Raspberry Pi), notebooks and compact electronics, edge AI and data infrastructure, medical technology, aerospace, automotive and robotics. The technology is based on peer-reviewed research at Empa (publications 2023–2024).
