About IonQ
IonQ, Inc. is a US technology company founded in 2015 by Dr. Chris Monroe and Dr. Jungsang Kim and headquartered in College Park, Maryland. Building on more than 30 years of academic research, whose findings entered the company as licenses from the University of Maryland and Duke University, IonQ develops and manufactures quantum computers based on the trapped-ion principle: ionized ytterbium atoms are positioned in linear ion traps in 3D space and manipulated for quantum gates via precisely controlled laser beams. The systems are produced in-house using lithographed ion-trap chips (around 100 electrodes), ultra-high vacuum chambers (approx. 10^-11 Torr) and opto-mechanical control systems. In addition to full-stack quantum computing (cloud access via Amazon Braket, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud), the portfolio also includes quantum networks, quantum security (QKD), quantum sensing, quantum space infrastructure as well as application development and consulting. With semiconductor-grade diamond thin films, IonQ is driving forward the industrial production of diamond quantum devices. Customers include Hyundai, Airbus, AstraZeneca, DARPA and NVIDIA; the roadmap foresees systems with 2 million physical and 80,000 logical qubits by 2030.

Technologies and Processes
Ytterbium (ionized atoms)
Ionized ytterbium atoms serve as qubits and are manipulated and read out via lasers in ion traps.
Quantum-grade diamond thin films
Semiconductor-grade diamond thin films enable the industrial production of diamond quantum devices.
Lithographed ion-trap chips
Linear ion traps with around 100 electrodes hold the ions electromagnetically in 3D space.
