Käserei Schnider in Giswil
The dairy-cheesery Schnider AG is a family business founded in 1940 in Giswil in the canton of Obwalden, now run in its third generation by Thomas Schnider. From milk delivered daily by farms in the immediate vicinity, the team of around 12 produces cheese specialities and fresh milk products using traditional craftsmanship. The range includes, among other things, Obwaldner Bratkäse, Wildmaa, Schacher Seppli, Fluonalp Sbrinz, raclette-suitable cheeses as well as whole milk and drink milk, cream, butter, Ziger, quark and yoghurt, produced with a gentle pasteurisation process and without additives. The cheeses ripen for between 2 months and 3 years depending on the variety. In addition, the company operates the seasonal Alpine dairy and inn Fluonalp, Schnider's Dorfladä in Giswil, an online shop and a corporate gift offering with regional specialities. Since 2019, a photovoltaic system has generated part of the electricity, with the remainder sourced from hydropower.
