About the Atelier
The Keramikatelier Beate Pelz produces mainly vessel ceramics as one-of-a-kind pieces and small series in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg. The works are created from her own designs, which are often preceded by hand drawings and sketches; the owner cites natural shapes, plants and animals as sources of inspiration. Pieces are thrown on the potter's wheel, sometimes with modelled elements combined with the thrown vessels, or the pieces are cut and deformed. The decorations are executed as floral and geometrically painted faience, slip painting (engobe), or colourfully glazed pieces; the body firing takes place at 1100 °C, a temperature range that allows strong colour intensity. The premises of the sole proprietorship are located in a former butcher's shop where several ceramicists have found a home. In addition to her own workshop, ceramics design courses are offered in Berlin-Kaulsdorf; the works are also presented at markets.
