About KBO
Kieswerk Ottendorf-Okrilla GmbH & Co. KG (KBO) has been extracting and processing sand and gravel from open-cast mining in the Laußnitzer Heide on an industrial scale since 1949. Today, the company ranks among the largest gravel plants in Germany. The "Ottendorf" raw material is characterised by a high quartz content and the absence of sulphate harmful to concrete. The processing plant at the open-cast mine has been in operation since 1993 and has a processing capacity of over 500 t/h. As bulk materials from its own facilities, the company offers gravel, sand and anti-icing grit – primarily for regional ready-mixed concrete plants and structural and civil engineering companies, but also for road construction, landscaping and private customers. Delivery is made loose by truck (up to 27 t) or by rail on request. Through its subsidiary Transportbeton Ottendorf-Okrilla GmbH (TBO), KBO produces ready-mixed concrete. At its own earth-material landfill, the company accepts backfill materials such as soil and stones, concrete, bricks, tiles and ceramics. The company is reclaiming and rehabilitating the over 250 ha open-cast mine in a variety of ways. Since 2022, a roughly 2,700 m long conveyor system has transported around 4,000 t of gravel daily from the Würschnitz open-cast mine to Laußnitz for processing, avoiding around 300 truck journeys per day. Around 150 people work at the site; in the adjacent Laußnitzer Heide industrial and business park, downstream processors such as
