The LMBV – Project-management agency for mining remediation

The Lausitzer und Mitteldeutsche Bergbau-Verwaltungsgesellschaft mbH (LMBV) is the project-management agency for East German mining remediation and, on behalf of the federal government and the federal states, remediates the legacy of GDR lignite mining in Lusatia and Central Germany as well as potash, spar and ore mining in Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony and Thuringia. Its activities include the geotechnical stabilization of spoil areas using compaction methods such as vibro-displacement compaction, vibro-compaction, drop-weight compaction and blasting compaction, the flooding of open-cast residual pits, water management including hazard prevention during groundwater rebound, and water treatment, such as in-lake neutralization of acidified post-mining lakes with lime or the treatment of iron-laden waters in water treatment plants. Further fields of activity are recultivation, demolition of decommissioned industrial facilities, closure of underground mine voids, and the reuse and marketing of remediated properties. The LMBV plans, tenders remediation services, awards them to private-sector companies and takes on project management, monitoring and acceptance. The federal company is wholly owned by the Federal Republic of Germany, represented by the Federal Ministry of Finance. The headquarters are located in Senftenberg; further sites are Leipzig and Sondershausen.

Methods and Applied Materials

KIP

Spoil soil (sandy spoil soil)

Base material of the internal dumps, which is stabilized by compaction methods for subsequent uses.

KALK

Quicklime / limestone flour

Used for in-lake neutralization of acidified post-mining lakes, among other things via the remediation vessel KLARA.

EHS

Iron hydroxide sludge

Deposit in watercourses that is removed via settling facilities and water treatment plants.

KALI

Potash salts, spar, ore

Raw materials of the decommissioned underground mining whose mine voids are closed by the LMBV.

ST/BT

Steel and concrete

Materials used in the construction of diversions, locks and bridges as well as in the demolition of industrial facilities.

Quality and Advisory Boards

The LMBV has new methods assessed by the Scientific-Technical Advisory Board (WTB, since 2004) and the Geotechnical Advisory Board (GTB, since 2010) and maintains a monitoring system for the long-term stability of internal dumps. The implementation of remediation work takes place with monitoring and acceptance by the LMBV as the project-management agency responsible under mining law.
