About Leuchtstoffwerk Breitungen
Leuchtstoffwerk Breitungen GmbH (LWB) develops and manufactures inorganic phosphors and optical materials for light generation, diagnostics, product marking and the protection of banknotes and security documents. The portfolio includes LED and EL phosphors, UV and infrared phosphors, scintillators (X-ray phosphors), security pigments and zinc sulfides with purities up to 99.99%. Production on 5,000 m² of production space in Breitungen achieves an annual capacity of more than 1,000 tonnes; batch sizes range from sample quantities in the gram range and pilot quantities in the kilogram range up to orders on the tonne scale. In addition, LWB offers functional nanocoatings of inorganic particles by CVD technology as contract coating, an application laboratory, pilot plant and scale-up, as well as customer-specific development with detection systems for security pigments. Customer industries include lighting, displays, automotive, analytics, cosmetics, medicine, sensor technology, the semiconductor industry, polymer processing and chemicals. The company, founded in 1948, has around 100 employees, more than 20 of them in research and development, has been a subsidiary of Treibacher Industrie AG since 2012 and supplies customers worldwide.

Materials and Processes
Zinc sulfide (99.99% purity)
High-purity starting material for phosphors, produced in a separate building to avoid cross-contamination.
LED phosphors (silicates, nitrides, garnets)
In production since 2001, gradually expanded for lighting and displays.
EL phosphors / EL pigments
For electroluminescence applications, in production since 1960 and as pigments since 2016.
UV phosphors
Emission in the non-visible spectral range for technical and medical applications.
Infrared phosphors
For machine-readable features in light sources and security applications.
Scintillators / X-ray phosphors (calcium tungstate)
For diagnostics and analytics, in production since 1953, dedicated plant since 1997.
Lamp phosphors (halophosphates)
Classic lamp phosphors, in production since 1953.
Security pigments (UV-VIS, VIS-VIS, phosphorescence, IR-IR, VIS-IR,
Light-, chemical- and thermally resistant pigments for material-integrated authentication in banknotes and industrial products.
Particle coating by CVD technology
Functional nanocoatings with defined composition on metals, semiconductors, oxides and composite materials, also as contract coating.
