Luna Innovations Germany GmbH (LIOS SENSING), based in Cologne, develops and manufactures distributed fiber-optic sensing systems based on passive optical fibers. The systems continuously measure temperature and strain over long distances and large areas and are used, among other things, as linear heat detection (DE.TECT), for power cable monitoring with Real-Time Thermal Rating (EN.SURE), for industrial temperature and strain monitoring (PRE.VENT), and for oil & gas applications (WELL.DONE). The interrogators use OFDR and OTDR localization techniques with semiconductor laser diodes according to Telcordia GR-468; thanks to passive cooling without moving parts and long-lasting telecom components, an MTBF of over 40 years is specified. In addition to manufacturing and R&D, the company offers turn-key services from planning through installation and commissioning to service, maintenance, training, and spare parts. Fields of application include fire protection in road and railway tunnels, special structures, power grids, induction furnaces, and structural monitoring; reference projects include the 345-kV HouLi substation of Taiwan Power Company. The systems are ATEX/IECEx certified and are manufactured in Cologne under ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
