About LyondellBasell Wesseling-Knapsack
Basell Polyolefine GmbH is a company of the LyondellBasell Group, one of the largest plastics and chemicals companies in the world. At the Wesseling site (2.7 km²), the company operates six production plants, and two further plants at the Hürth-Knapsack site. Products manufactured are polyolefins – polyethylene and polypropylene – in the form of pellets/granules and granulate, as well as the chemicals ethylene, propylene, butadiene and isobutane. The MoReTec plant is in operation in Wesseling, the first single-train chemical recycling plant at industrial scale with an annual capacity of 50,000 tonnes, which converts pre-sorted plastic waste catalytically into feedstock for new plastics. At the Ludwigshafen site (on the BASF site), LYB produces Avant polyolefin catalysts on four lines. In addition to production, the company licenses polyolefin and chemical processes (including Spheripol, Hostalen ACP) worldwide and offers technology services. Customer industries include packaging, automotive, agriculture, medical/pharmaceutical, infrastructure and telecommunications.

Materials & Processes
Polyethylene
Produced in Wesseling as pellets/granules and granulate and processed into packaging, pipes, automotive fuel tanks and consumer goods.
Polypropylene
Second core product of the site, used among other things for automotive, household goods and packaging.
Ethylene / Propylene
Chemicals from the cracker as feedstock for polymerization.
Butadiene
Obtained in a dedicated butadiene plant at the Wesseling site.
Isobutane
Chemical from Wesseling production.
Naphtha (raw gasoline)
Used as feedstock in the cracker plants.
Catalytic chemical recycling
Converts mixed and flexible plastic waste into pyrolysis oil and gas as feedstock for new plastics.
Solvent-based recycling
Separates polymer types in multilayer flexible films and produces high-purity recyclates.
Polyolefin catalysts (Ziegler-Natta, chromium, metallocene)
Improve efficiency and product quality in PE and PP processes; produced in Ludwigshafen.
Recyclates and renewable polymers
Product line made from chemically and mechanically recycled feedstocks, among others for medical and food packaging.

Quality & Safety
The Wesseling plant is classified as an upper-tier establishment under the Major Accidents (Seveso) Ordinance; implementation is regularly reviewed by the Cologne district government (last on-site inspection June 2024). Safety, environment and quality are bundled under a dedicated site management function (safety/environment/quality); accident figures have been below the German industry average for years.
