About the association
Naturschutzhaus e.V. is a volunteer-based nature conservation association based in Wiesbaden whose roots go back to a loosely organised nature conservation working group founded in 1980. The association carries out species protection projects, publishes brochures and informational materials, and offers excursions and lectures. Thematic focuses are amphibians, reptiles – especially the Aesculapian snake –, bats, orchids, bird protection, honey bees as well as general habitat maintenance and the topic of nature around the home. Practical work includes the creation and maintenance of small water bodies and frog ponds, the construction of toad underpasses, forest clean-ups and the building of dry stone walls and egg-laying sites. The association maintains an association house in the Wellritz valley in Wiesbaden, the so-called Naturschutzhaus. Participation is also possible without membership; the work is hands-on and without excessive formality. Over the years, the group has contributed to numerous areas worthy of protection in and around Wiesbaden being granted the status of nature reserve or natural monument.
