About the Nowy Casnik

The Nowy Casnik (German: New Newspaper) is a weekly newspaper whose articles appear in Lower Sorbian and German. It is the only Lower Sorbian (Wendish) newspaper and the successor to the first Lower Sorbian newspaper Bramborski Serbski Casnik, which was first published in 1848. During the National Socialist era the newspaper was banned; in 1947 it was re-established, initially as a supplement to the Upper Sorbian newspaper Nowa doba, and since 1954 the Nowy Casnik has been published again as an independent weekly. Circulation was 1,100 copies in 2004, 800 in 2013 and today around 700 copies. In addition to the print subscription (from €26.40/year), there is an online edition or e-paper (from €14.40/year). The newspaper is sold in Cottbus and some neighbouring places to the north; the local-affairs editorial office is based in Cottbus (Sorbian: Chóśebuz).
