About Perten Instruments

Perten Instruments is a company specializing in analytical instruments for quality control of food and animal feed. The food chemist Harald Perten founded the company in 1962 after he had developed, together with Sven Hagberg, the Falling Number method for determining alpha-amylase activity in flour and barley malt to technical maturity; the method became an internationally recognized standard. Since the early 1980s, a key focus has been on near-infrared (NIR) instruments for laboratory and process applications. The portfolio includes Falling Number analyzers, whole grain and benchtop NIR analyzers, process NIR instruments, FTIR analyzers for dairy and beverages, Rapid Visco Analyzers, the doughLab dough rheometer, the Glutomatic system for gluten testing, and laboratory hammer and disc mills for sample preparation. With the acquisition of Newport Scientific (2007), rheological testing was added; since 2014 Perten has been part of PerkinElmer, and in 2016 Delta Instruments was integrated. The company was represented in 100 countries and today belongs to PerkinElmer, US. LLC headquartered in Shelton, Connecticut (USA).

Sample Materials and Measurement Methods

FN

Falling Number Method (Alpha-Amylase Activity)

Standard method for detecting sprout damage in grain and flour as well as for assessing the brewing properties of barley malt.

NIR

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIR)

Non-destructive determination of moisture, protein, fat, oil and further parameters in the laboratory and in process.

FTIR

FTIR Analysis for Dairy and Beverages

Rapid analysis of quality components in milk, cream, whey, concentrates and yogurt mixes.

RVA

Rapid Visco Analyser

Determination of the viscosity properties of starch, grain and dairy products.

doughLab

Dough Rheology (doughLab)

Measures water absorption, dough development time, stability, softening and mixing tolerance index of flour.

Glutomatic

Glutomatic System

Worldwide standard for gluten index, gluten quantity and gluten quality in wheat, flours and vital wheat gluten.

Mills

Laboratory Hammer and Disc Mills

Sample preparation as the basis for accurate analyses.
