About PTR Strahltechnik
PTR Strahltechnik GmbH, headquartered in Langenselbold near Frankfurt am Main, is a medium-sized company in the field of electron beam technology. The company develops and manufactures EB systems for welding, hardening and drilling and additionally offers contract manufacturing from prototypes to series runs of over 100,000 parts per year. Its range of services includes electron beam welding in vacuum with weld depths of over 200 mm, EB welding at atmospheric pressure (NVEBW), flying EB drilling at up to 3,000 holes per second, local surface modification (hardening, remelting, contouring) as well as laser welding at reduced pressure. Processing is performed on almost all metallic materials, from aluminium via titanium and copper to hard-to-weld materials such as Zircaloy or tungsten. PTR is part of Global Beam Technologies AG (GBT), which also includes Steigerwald Strahltechnik GmbH in Maisach and PTR Precision Technologies Inc. in Enfield (USA). The company traces its origins to the EB welding department of Leybold-Heraeus in Hanau and has developed more than 600 EB systems for the world market to date. Customer segments include automotive, aerospace, machinery and plant engineering, energy technology, defence technology and medical technology.

Materials & Processes
Electron beam welding
Joining of metallic materials with a narrow seam, minimal distortion and weld depths of over 200 mm in a single pass.
EB welding at atmospheric pressure
EB welding at atmospheric pressure, primarily for aluminium components such as cockpit crossmembers.
EB drilling (flying drilling)
Highly reproducible drilling in all metallic materials at up to 3,000 holes per second.
EB hardening / surface treatment
Local surface layer treatment through hardening, remelting and contouring of metallic component surfaces.
Laser welding in vacuum
Reduced-pressure laser welding doubles the weld depth compared to atmospheric pressure at the same laser power.
Aluminium
EB-weldable even despite the oxide layer, e.g. for cockpit crossmembers.
Titanium
Welding in vacuum delivers excellent metallurgical results for reactive materials.
Copper
The high beam power overcomes the high thermal conductivity that limits other processes.
Zircaloy / Zirconium
A difficult-to-weld material that can be processed using the EB vacuum process.
Refractory metals (tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum)
Hard-to-weld high-temperature materials are joined using the EB process.
Steel
Metallic steel materials, e.g. for transmission components and turbochargers.
