About Spiess
Siegfried Spiess Motorenbau GmbH, based in Ditzingen near Stuttgart, develops, manufactures and services racing and high-performance engines for national and international motorsport. Founded in 1972, this second-generation family business is an official partner for Porsche Cup engines and has been working with manufacturers such as Volkswagen, Opel/GM and Porsche for decades. Its range of services includes design and component engineering with FEM analyses, reassembly and overhaul of engines, machining and reconditioning of cylinder blocks, crankshafts, connecting rods and valves, as well as failure analysis and crack testing. Through the brands Spiess RACing, Spiess Classic and Spiess CNC, the company serves youngtimer and classic car customers as well as non-automotive contract manufacturing in addition to motorsport. Around 40 employees work at a single site with four test benches, CNC machining centers and a climate-controlled measuring room with a 3D coordinate measuring machine.

Processes & Technologies
Design with FEM analyses
Concept development, 3D design and design-accompanying FEM analyses for racing, test and series-production engines.
CNC and conventional machining
Machining and reconditioning of engines and components such as cylinder blocks, crankshafts, connecting rods and valves.
Test benches (1 dynamic, 3 stationary)
Engine measurement, endurance runs, strip-down, friction loss investigations and component tests through to final acceptance.
Crack testing
Crack testing of components, including under pressure and temperature.
3D coordinate measurement
Measurement of workpieces up to X 900 mm, Y 1000 mm, Z 800 mm and 1200 kg in the fully climate-controlled measuring room.

Quality
Every component is strictly inspected before installation; the fully climate-controlled measuring room is equipped with standard measuring systems and a 3D coordinate measuring machine, and measurement results are analyzed and documented. Every reconditioned engine receives a final test on the test bench.
