SMELLDECT GmbH, based in Deckenpfronn (Baden-Württemberg), develops, manufactures and distributes an electronic nose (eNase) – a portable odor-measuring device for everyday tasks in the private and commercial sectors. The device, only a few centimeters in size, is based on a chip with tin dioxide nanowires. Analogous to the biological nose, various odors can be trained into the sensor; after training a pattern, the sensor identifies the odor within seconds. The output is simple and fast, e.g. as ok/not ok, dangerous/harmless, or as identification of one odor out of n possible ones. Fields of application include indoor air monitoring and intelligent fire detectors that can already detect smoldering substances, as well as food inspection and characterization (e.g. fish, meat, honey), plant monitoring, production control, medical technology, and environmental and safety technology. The eNase is expandable and can be combined with other sensors for more precise analyses.
