About the Spielkartenfabrik

The Spielkartenfabrik Stralsund is a non-profit project of SPEICHER_Leute e.V. (VR 268) and combines museum, workshop and laboratory in one working print museum. It produces historical and own card decks as well as printed matter such as postcards and city maps – predominantly in letterpress on historical machines, complemented by planographic printing (lithography), screen printing, intaglio (drypoint etching), linocut, relief printing from wood (mokulito) and textile printing. Equipment includes, among others, a Linotype typesetting machine, historical lithography presses and letterpress machines; typesetting is done in hand composition at the type case and in machine setting. Materials are cardboard/paper, linoleum, wood, textile and Tetrapack as printing-block base. The workshop on the ground floor of the warehouse on Katharinenberg in Stralsund's old town offers guided tours, workshops, school and holiday projects as well as a youth workshop. Target audiences are museum visitors, school classes and young people; production can be experienced publicly during ongoing operation.
