About Sternburg
Sternburg, colloquially known as Sterni, is a beer brand originating from the former Sternburg brewery in the Leipzig district of Lützschena, which existed between 1822 and 1991. The beer is now brewed and bottled by the Radeberger Group and sold mainly in eastern Germany; in 2006 its market share there was 9.5 percent. The historic brewery was taken over in 1822 by Maximilian Speck von Sternburg, operated from 1823 in the Bavarian brewing style with bottom-fermented lager beers, and in 1913 renamed Brauerei Sternburg G.m.b.H. Leipzig-Lützschena, at that time one of the largest breweries in Central Germany. In 1989, around 500 employees produced approximately 500,000 hectoliters of beer. After nationalization in the GDR and a re-establishment in 1990, production in Lützschena ended in 1991; since 1992 the Reudnitz brewery has continued the brand, with Sternburg Export being its best-known variety.
